Tractor Wheel Spacers: Are They Safe? Stability Guide for John Deere & Kubota

Posted by UTV Parts and Accessories on Jul 18th 2026

Wheel spacers widen a compact tractor's stance by moving each wheel outboard — typically 1.5" to 6" per side — which measurably improves stability on slopes, with loaders, and under rear implements. For subcompact and compact tractors like the John Deere 1025R or Kubota BX, which combine a narrow factory track with a high center of gravity and a loader up in the air, spacers are one of the most cost-effective safety upgrades you can bolt on.

We sell precision-machined tractor wheel spacers in aluminum (Bora) and steel (Stahl) for John Deere's 1000 through 5000 series and F-series mowers, and Kubota's B, BX, and L series — browse them all in Tractor Wheel Spacers, or call 800-596-0785 with your model and we'll confirm fit.

Are wheel spacers safe on a tractor?

Quality spacers, correctly installed, are a stability upgrade — not a compromise. The concerns you'll read about on forums come down to two things, both avoidable:

  • Cheap universal spacers that aren't machined for your hub. Ours are model-specific, machined flat and true, with hardware matched to your studs.
  • Improper torque. Spacers must be torqued to spec on clean, dry threads — and re-torqued after the first 2–4 hours of operation, then checked periodically like any wheel.

Do those two things and you get a wider, more planted machine with no change to how it drives. Note that spacers add leverage on axle components; stay within your tractor manufacturer's loading guidance.

What spacers actually do for you

  • Slope stability: widening the rear track directly increases the tip-over threshold — the reason mowing crews on hillsides run them.
  • Loader work: a raised, loaded bucket moves the center of gravity up and forward; a wider stance keeps the rear planted through turns.
  • Tire clearance: spacers make room for loaded (ballasted) tires, chains, or wider rubber that rubs the fenders at full steering lock.
  • Implement stability: heavy 3-point implements sway less on a wider stance.

Aluminum (Bora) vs. steel (Stahl)

Bora aluminum wheel spacer pair for John Deere 1025R compact tractor

Bora (aluminum) Stahl (steel)
Weight Light — easy one-person install Heavier — adds a little ballast where you want it
Corrosion Excellent resistance Very good with coating; ultimate durability
Typical Starting price (pair) $444.90 $534.00

Example fits for the most popular subcompact out there: Bora aluminum rear spacers for the John Deere 1025R ($444.90/pair), matching fronts ($444.90/pair), and Stahl steel versions of both. Kubota owners: the Kubota spacers section covers B, BX, and L series by model.

Front, rear, or both?

Start with the rear — that's where the stability gain lives, since tip-overs pivot around the rear axle line on slopes. Add fronts to keep steering geometry looking and tracking right, and to gain clearance for front chains or wider tires. Most owners doing serious slope work run both.

Frequently asked questions

Will spacers void my tractor's warranty?

Bolt-on spacers don't modify the tractor, and dealers see them constantly. Warranty questions on a specific failure are always the dealer's call, so keep installation torqued to spec and documented.

How long does installation take?

About an hour per axle with a jack, jack stands, and a torque wrench. The spacer bolts to the hub, and the wheel bolts to the spacer. Re-torque after the first few hours of use.

How much wider will my tractor be?

Track width increases by twice the spacer thickness — a 1.5" spacer per side adds 3" of total stance. Make sure your shed door and trailer still fit before going wider.

Do wheel spacers ship free?

Most of what we sell ships free to the lower 48 — each product page shows its shipping terms.

Mow the hill, not the hospital bill. Find your model in Tractor Wheel SpacersJohn Deere or Kubota — or call 800-596-0785 and a real person in the USA will confirm the fit.
