Golf Cart Hand Controls: A Simple Guide for Disabled Golfers and Drivers

Short answer: golf cart hand controls put the gas and the brake on one hand lever by the steering wheel. You push the lever to stop. You rock it back to go. Your feet do nothing. The kit bolts onto the cart you already own, and the pedals still work for anyone else.

Who are golf cart hand controls for?

They are for anyone who cannot use foot pedals safely. That includes people with paralysis, an amputation, nerve damage, bad knees or hips, or weak legs from age or illness. Many of our buyers are golfers who want to stay on the course. Others use a cart to get around a farm, a campground, a lake place or a retirement community.

You do not need to buy a special cart. A hand control kit is added to a normal golf cart.

How do they work?

We sell the Sure Grip push/rock control. It has one upright handle next to the steering column.

• Push the handle forward to brake.
• Rock the handle back toward you to speed up.

The handle only moves a little, so your arm does not get tired. Going from gas to brake is smooth and fast. One hand runs the handle. The other hand steers.

Can my family still drive the cart?

Yes. The kit does not take out or block the pedals. The foot pedals work the same as before. A spouse, a friend or a grandchild can hop in and drive the normal way.

Which golf carts do they fit?

The Sure Grip R118 kit fits most models and years of EZ-GO, Club Car and Evolution golf carts. Sure Grip lists it for go carts too.

Two things to check first:

• Turn signal kits. A custom turn signal kit on the steering column may get in the way.
• Plastic column covers. Many new carts have a plastic shroud around the steering column. It may need to be taken off or trimmed so the control can mount.

The kit works on both gas and electric golf carts.

What comes in the kit?

What if I can only steer with one hand?

Since one hand is on the control, many drivers add a steering wheel grip. It clamps to the wheel so you can steer with one hand. You can add one when you order:

Can I install them myself?

It is a bolt-on kit with a clamp-on bracket, so a handy owner or any local shop can put it in. If you get stuck, call or email us. We can walk you through most install questions, and when we cannot, we know how to get the answer.

Will the VA pay for hand controls?

It may. Mechanical hand controls for gas and brake are a listed item under the VA's Automobile Adaptive Equipment (AAE) program for veterans with a service-connected disability. Coverage for golf carts and UTVs is decided case by case.

• Ask your VA Prosthetics and Sensory Aids department about AAE approval before you order.
• Keep your itemized invoice. Claims go on VA Form 10-1394.
• We are glad to quote and invoice VA medical centers, voc-rehab agencies and nonprofits. Payment is due before the kit ships.

Hand controls or a special accessible golf cart?

Some golfers need more than hand controls. If you cannot transfer into a cart seat, a single-rider adaptive cart with a swivel seat may be the better tool. We do not sell those. But if you can sit in a normal cart seat and your hands and arms are strong, hand controls are the simple, low-cost way to drive the cart you have.
